BTS: jCp Workshop

Had my first one-on-one workshop teaching photography and was even more glad that we had a model to practice my "student's" newfound skill set. This model happened to be my good friend Lauren whom I've known since high school. Special thanks to JuJu Li (elitestylist.com) who provided terrific hair and makeup!

Above is Lauren changing shoes--the last piece to her outfit in preparation for our shoot.

Here's a pic of Diane taking various shots of Lauren as JuJu makes adjustments for Lauren.

It wouldn't be a shoot if everyone didn't have fun. While Diane took majority of the pictures, that left me making Lauren laugh to get some real nice natural shots.

Location wise, this was set at Pacifica's Rockaway Beach. Diane and I met at Nick's Restaurant (although i was the only one who ate breakfast haha) Despite it being foggy (actually a photographer's preferred shooting conditions) and windy (which made JuJu work harder) we had a good session.

Digital Cameras?! Forgetaboutit!! Why Film Can Be Better than Digital. Gasp!

A friend of mine showed me this video late in the am while conversing online. He kept cracking up on how he saw this commercial air in the wee hours on NBA TV haha So I took a look at it and while I was laughing, the video has some good points. With that being said, I will say that in some occasions, 35mm film photography is much easier and more practical.

Since this post was originally just to highlight this video, I'll give reasons as to why "regular" film photography can actually be better than digital photography:

1. Shoot for Keeps
Face it: when's the last time you actually held a photograph in your hand? I know you have a digital camera and I know you post pictures to your Facebook and even email them to friends and family...but when's the last time you actually felt a photograph? Shooting 35mm film photography is the easiest way to get them in your hand. You don't need to download your memory card to your computer, go through them, upload to a printing service and then have it shipped. Just drop off the roll of film to Walgreens or Target and by the time you're done shopping or running your errands, your roll of film is done!

2. Share Your Photos
The video did a good job in illustrating the ease of sharing your photos: you simply give them to your friends and family. It's also called human interaction. In the day of digital, everything is easy since you can send information in an instant. I admit, I love it. But what I also love [and now miss] is the actual interaction of humans! I use to play video games at friend's houses... now more often is playing online. I actually had a penpal but now email is just easier. So having a picture you can send to a friend or family in mail once in awhile is truly a needle in a haystack which makes it even more special. So take time and share your photos by actually giving a photograph and not a file.

3. Travel Light without Having Your Camera Insight
I purposely rhymed..I know...but you bought your digital for $200-400 for your pocket digital camera and now you're going on to a trip. Well you did buy that camera for photography purposes but maybe you're double thinking about bringing it to an area that it can possibly be damaged or even stolen. This is where the film camera comes to play: it's lo-fi so it's not going to be a thief's wanted item and because of its relatively low price, you wouldn't mind if you damaged the camera. And God forbid it gets stolen, it only cost you a couple of $20 bucks. Bonus! Once you get your prints, put them in actual album :gasp!: in which you can keep of all your travels. When guests come in, it'll be great conversation fodder!

4. Film Hones Your Skills
The great part about digital photography is you can take more than 300 shots in one digital memory card. The worse part about digital photography is that you don't need more than 300 shots...especially if it's all taken during one event. Depending on your roll of film, you can take anywhere between 27-36 shots in one roll. Meaning, you better make sure you make every shot count! If you're shooting with film, you're practically force to take better pictures! You don't 5 shots of close up shots of your shoes or a particular place--one shot is good enough. I've taken a film camera when I traveled and it definitely tells a story much better than going through hundreds of digital photos.

The upsides of film is that it trains you take better pictures and become a better storyteller.

5. Film Has the Element of Surprise!
Once you're done with your roll, take it to wherever you get it developed (nowadays, a developed roll runs for about $8-9.. it's gotten up over the years =/) but while it is getting developed, relax, shop around, read a book--do something! When you get it back, you can relive the moments you had. I know instant is nice and all--digital photography has allowed us to make life move faster by capturing images and sending it immediately. But with film photography, that roll of film you have is your time capsule. Once you drop off that roll and you get the pictures, it immediately sends you back in time as you hold the photographs and go through each one.

Bonus! 35mm Photography Can Be Fun!
If you're wanting a simple point and shoot film camera that can enable cool effects without having to work with them in Photoshop, check out the camera on Lomography. Yes they are pricey but do some research [check out B&H Photo & Video or eBay] and I'm sure you can get a good price.

I actually own 2 cameras from Lomography and it definitely makes shooting photography fun--the SuperSampler and ActionSampler. Another lo-fi camera that's one of my favorites is the simple Vivitar Slim & Wide.

Since I'll be going to the Philippines for the majority of September, I will most likely bring one 35mm camera to make life much simpler.

E-Session: Patricio and Melanie (08/22/10) - Teaser

For my friend and director Patricio Ginelsa, he definitely had a vision for his engagement pictures with his fiancé Melanie. It was definitely fun and since I've been on his music video sets more than a couple of times, I've grown to know how a day will unfold working with him: In short, it was fun while putting in hard work in the day.

Now I don't want to spoil it for his wedding day when he'll use this so I'll only show a few of the pics that I liked.

To start it off, I had a mini "studio" session with Pat and Mel. You can't tell from this picture, but both are wearing his custom shirt that reads "indie" which represents Pat's role as an independent filmaker. There's also a nifty story to the vintage video camera he's holding and it was great to learn how it worked back in the day. Oh the advances we've made!

We headed to San Francisco's Embarcadero where we strolled along the pier. If you read the BTS post on this shoot, they wanted to be pictured with their food loves The Coffee Bean and Tuttimelon.

This shot is from the "scene" Pat had in mind to be photographed in. Basically, Pat and Mel spent a lot of time on the road promoting on the Filipino-American movie The Debut. And when they say long time on the road, it really was a long time driving to different cities promoting the film several years ago. And so for this scene, he wanted to recreate the scene of them in their Honda Civic wearing the shirts and tags driving on the road. I loved how both were really into it despite already going to different locations and dress changes--yes we had wardrobe changes like on a film set! haha

For the last location, Pat wanted to go to the location that is very dear to him. This location in Daly City is where he shot his 1st trilogy when he was a teenager and then also revisited it for a scene in his premiere movie Lumpia that was toured across the nation. While Pat and Mel live in LA currently, both are natives of Daly City and I was glad to use my hometown as well as part of their engagement session.

Many thanks to Pat and Mel for having me take their photos and also to Nicole for assisting me the entire day [I had another engagement session prior to this one]. Can't wait to get all the photos edited for you so you can for sure use them for your wedding day!

E-Session: Patricio and Melanie (08/22/10) - Behind the Scenes

After my session with Louie and Bern, I had a mini break before heading out to my next engagement shoot with Pat and Mel.

You may be wondering why this is the first picture of this BTS series post... well, low and behold that actually is me when I was about 3-4 years old! This engagement session was for my friend Patricio who is also a director for his Kid Heroes Productions. When we were kids [meaning for me, I was the baby of them all], we'd play baseball with all the other kids in the neighborhood. He and his brother made actual baseball cards of most of the kids who played baseball and so when I arrived, he wanted to show me my very own card circa 1990-1991. haha!

Knowing Pat, he previsualized his very own engagement session and so I was there to help accomplish his vision as well as chime in with my very own direction.

I ain't gonna lie: directing an actual director is daunting haha But remembering Pat and Mel as friends made the whole shoot smooth.

Pictured above is Pat's brother Darriel while Pat gets a really old video camera prepped for the shoot. In the back, Mel is getting ready with make up.

I have Pat and Mel review the pics we shot in their director's chairs before we proceed to the next location.

Before we took our pics at Embarcadero, they wanted to be pictured with their favs Coffee Bean and Tuttimelon frozen yogurt. They were nice enough to grab Nicole and I some too to beat the weather!

Just noticed in the above picture that we all seem to be pointing with some concerned looks haha I believe this is where I'm talking to them and letting them know where we'll head soon afterward.

Where we were pointing at is where we are now.. at one of the piers with the Bay Bridge in the background.

One of the last locations was at Hillside Park in Daly City. This certain location Pat has used couple of times in his featured videos like his 1st trilogy Kid Heroes and Lumpia.

Again showing them a preview of the shots I took to ensure everything's A-ok!

E-Session: Louie and Bern (08/22/10) feat. MotionScope Studies

I'll first start off this post with a group picture of those present on this engagement session with my grammar school friend Bernadette and her soon to be hubby Louie. This was taken on School of Motion's glidetrack in which my assistant, Nicole, placed her Canon G10 on top of while we post in back of Coit Tower in San Francisco.

Here's Ryan and I waiting for Bern and Louie to arrive as we also make some final adjustments to our equipment.

During this shoot, we definitely hit two birds with one stone as in between locations, Ryan would interview the couple and answer a few questions about who they are and how they meet for example. Professional audio and video were taken so you can imagine how this scene looked like in such a public [and beautiful] spot.

Next spot was taken at a place where they actually met: Jefferson High School in Daly City. Glad that the gates were open despite it being a Sunday.

We took a few shots around the school and was glad that they chose a spot that had special meaning to them both.

While I showed them how they can possibly pose, I joked about the poster that hung right next to me haha

This was one of the last shots I took before calling it wrap. Francis [pictured at left] was taking some BTS video that he and Ryan will incorporate in the couple's love story video.

For old times sake, Bern and I took a photo and reminisced real quick on our years at Thomas R. Pollicita where I got to know Bern from 7th and 8th grade. Good times!

Event: San Francisco Food Festival 2010 (08/21/10)

My girlfriend happily walks to the San Francisco Food Festival. After a long day at work for her, she's ready to eat...

...for me, I'm happy to be here where I know I can eat to my heart's content in which I only brought $20.

While the lines were long [averaging about 15-20 min] it was definitely worth it. While you had to be selective, most of our eats were really good.

1st stop was Los Cilantros' corn that has been spread with mayo and then sprinkled with salt and spices.

And yes it was goood. It happened to my girlfriend Cher's favorite.

Quick story: the whole corn is $8 while half of it is only $3. We figure we'd be ok if we just got the smaller corn and when we paid a total of $6, the cashier forget what we ordered and the guy fulfilling the orders just gave us two whole corns. We quietly and quickly...walked away... haha

On to my favorite.. the fried chicken from Aziza! I love their organization: the girl took the orders, wrote your name on a Post-It and then went through them in order.

The primary reason why it was my favorite: just look at that fried spicy goodness!

While waiting in line for our fried chicken, I figure a quick sweet bite would be nice and here's Neococoa's bittersweet chocolate truffle brownies.

If I had cold cold milk with this considering it was a nice and sunny day, it would've been so much better.

Cher and I agree: the major flop was these Korean Tacos [and I won't say from where to save some embarrassment if they ever come across this]. I will say they're near the Ferry Building in SF though... First off, it happens to be a "taco" because the seaweed isn't rolled... hmm ok. But worse is when you bite it--you can't! The seaweed is already chewy due to the heated meat meaning this isn't bite-food. The solution? Cher and I stuffed the entire thing in our mouths and then it resembled what it was: a sushi. haha It tasted good, but execution was quite bad.

Now bang for the buck, this wins: $3 Bacon-Wrapped Hotdogs =) from Lucero's Hot Dogs.

That's the base but I added a bit of mayo and some ketchup, mustard, and some jalepeños.

Cher wanted the spice so she added a whole lot of jalepeños!

Lastly, to top off our full stomachs, we got a $5 pint of Cookies and Cream from Three Twins Organic Ice Cream. Delish!

My high school friend Lauren [pictured on the right] was able to make it through and brought along a friend to enjoy the food.

Definitely worth the trip to a busy SF/24th & Folsom street! When this happens again next year..totally down!

Quick tip: Before coming to the festival, I bought a 6 pack of Fat Tire beer and emptied 3 bottles to my Nalgene Bottle. So I had about a liter of beer for the same price of a cup that they sell at the festival. =)

I've been teaching John for this past summer in photography [as well as best business practices] and it's good to see him grow within the past couple of months. Importance of Catching Up

Velo Rouge's warm Breakfast Croissant served with fresh fruits. This at 10:30am is heaven.

Last Wednesday, I met up with my friend Aileen, former USF classmate and contributing writer to 12ftdwende.com at SF's Velo Rouge Cafe. You can also find her blog Deep Fried Funk in the blog world. She wanted to have a "creative catch up" session and because it's always good to see friends, there's definitely time to make it possible.

This blog post is merely a reflection of why I feel it's important to keep in touch with friends. Before I get into the "why," I've listed some "rules" about catching up so continue to read if you're interested:

First off, it needs to be genuine: Everyone needs help in their life and we're bound to ask another friend for help. Yet, to catch up with someone to ease your way into their graces in order to ask them a favor is not a genuine move. Relationships cannot exist because it is just beneficial to another person. Instead, relationships exist because both people can enjoy each other's company and are really interested in each other's life, and their endeavors.

To catch up means to ask questions: The reason why you're meeting up for food and/or coffee is because you want to know what's going on with your friend's life. This is especially easy if it's a one-on-one meeting since all your attention is directed to the person you're sharing a few bites with. Ask what s/he has been up to since the last time you saw her/him; ask if s/he has ate at a nice restaurant lately or anything else that s/he can enlighten you with. When it's your turn, your friend will ask these questions.

Share resources: If you're meeting up with someone and it has been awhile, chances are you've seen/talked to this person quite a few times in the past and so you do have an idea of who s/he is. Because you have a basic understanding of who and what this person is, you should be able to pitch some resources that s/he may be interested in. For example, Aileen mentioned how she wanted to be better in networking, so I told her about the books I've read that may help her: Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty by Harvey Mackay and books by Seth Godin were my top recommendations for her. Maybe it was a documentary you saw or an article you came across in the news that may be related to what s/he does...point is, make whatever you've come across recently that reminded you of your friend known. These resources you've found may be useful for your friend now or in the near future.

To catch up means to listen: I already mentioned that you should ask questions but sometimes, the tendency is to direct the other person's reply back to you. "Oh yea! That reminded me of one time when I...." or "Yeah, when I watched that movie, I definitely had a good time. My favorite part was..." You asked the question, so listen to their answers first and let them finish their thoughts.

Make it a routine: After catching up with your buddy, immediately schedule your next catch up session. If yall can't meet up again in person, make a note to email that person or an old-fashioned phone call. Let the other person know too when you'll want to talk again and s/he will be ready to update you accordingly.

Now you're waiting to know "Why is it important to catch up?" Here's my analogy:

We are all spiders. Yes those creatures with 8 legs who spin webs. And the key here is that spiders spin webs. From my experience of finding spiders, they have all been independent living--no one but themselves and their web.

We humans on the other hand, are social creatures dependent on our interactions for practically everything--food, entertainment, love, etc. Yet, we drive ourselves independently--we choose to do what we want to do because we can.

Relating ourselves to being spiders and spinning webs, we all need to construct this web. It's vital that we make a big strong web, aka our network, in order to survive in this world as well. If you ever watch a spider construct a web, he has to go around and create each web link one by one. If one web link is weak, then the entire web is weak as it can collapse when the flying prey gets caught. Just like us, we need to make our links strong and reliable. And just like the web, all the links are connected.

I've learned recently the importance of networking as it can get you really far [number one marketing tool is word of mouth and that's not possible if you're not part of a network]. In my opinion, a genuine network is not just accomplished by merely knowing a person of importance or who is connected to other people. It needs to be nourished, cultivated, and repaired one link at a time just like a web is constructed. Should your links get neglected, take time to revisit it and do whatever you can to refresh it.

What a Mango Taught Me

Here's a short story my mom shared while eating fresh mangoes for dessert after lunch the other day.

While eating the scored mango halves with spoons, my mom begins her story.

"You know when I was little, your lola [grandmother] would cut these mangoes and we would all fight for the halves." My mom is referring to her 9 brothers and sisters--a scene of chaos I can imagine as endless hands fight for the delicious fruit in the hot Philippine weather.

"Because she knew that we all wanted the halves and not the center with the bone [seed], what she did was cut the mango so that more of the fruit was on the bone." She continues, "The halves we usually wanted were so thin that we now wanted the bone since it had most of the fruit."

I sat there, eating my half of the mango and gestured for her to take the bone [seed]. I never wanted that part since I was little because I knew there wasn't as much fruit there. Now if my mom cut it up so that more of the fruit is now on the bone, then I'd think different and fight for that bone as my mom's brothers and sister would.

A fan of Seth Godin's blog, this short story resonated with me a lot because of how business-minded I've become. In short, how do you make something undesired desirable? That is the million-dollar question for any businessman.

Abbot and East Moltke: "Bed Frame with Drawers"

I haven't updated this blog roll in a bit but I do have several images that I've added to this collection since the last post. This was taken today before I ran my errands and it seems like the most common items from my observation has been bedroom-related items with mattresses being the number one counted item.

I've been working on this series for more than a year and it's interesting to see items come and go. I talked to my friend and editor Catherine who will will be working on this book as well and we've thrown some ideas here and there for the introduction that she will write.

Also, I do have an idea as to what I'd like to tie this project in after watching No Impact Man--if you haven't watch this documentary, go and get/rent it! Awesome film and some very good moments dare I say that are cute and heartwarming. That idea I'll keep under wraps until I figure out when this project is completed.

I'm still undecided when to close this project but until then, enjoy the series for now!

Abbot and East Moltke is an on-going project documenting the various items left by households at the corner of where I live. Different items have been left already and some of which I've already unfortunately missed. Michelle Unboxes Her iPad!

Today I delivered cotillion [18th Birthday] client Michelle's iPad which contains video and photos from her birthday party. She was definitely happy to see me with the Apple bag as she has been patiently waiting for its arrival. =) Check below for a quick recap video + pics:

Here's Michelle playing with her iPad for the first with sister Julie who is just as excited!

She laughed as she saw her photo right away as the wallpaper and lock screen.

I also dropped off the photo book since her mom still wanted a photo album in addition to the iPad.

BTS: Photoshoot: "John and Jane" (San Francisco, 07/24/10)

So after the great shoot with The Foreign Exchange and concert coverage that ended around 2am on Saturday, July 24th, I had to wake up by 7:45am to pack the car and prep for the next shoot entitled "John and Jane" that features MotionScope Studies stylist Jane Park.

I only got about 3.5 hours max of sleep so excuse me if I look like crap. haha But I digress..

The concept of the shoot is to depict the classic boy meets girl story using one person--Jane. Meaning, from a fashion standpoint, it's going to be an androgynous shoot. Luckily, with the help of My BF's Closet's Jessica Phan and Agnes Fernandez, things went a whole lot smoother in terms of styling Jane to portray "John" and "Jane."

We definitely were on a tight schedule since I knew the complexities of this shoot: 4 different locations, nearly 7 different looks since Jane had to 2 outfit changes to portray John and Jane per location.

We arrive at Frjtz Restaurant and with the help of the owner Santiago, he allowed us to use the beautifully designed restaurant.

There was a slight miscommunication when Santiago thought we were shooting at Valencia's restaurant when we were all waiting at the Haye's restaurant by 8:50am. So while waiting, Karen started on the makeup as well as Agnes on the hair [pictured above].

Probably the best part of the day for me is when I get to just wait for the talent to get ready. =)

The owner comes in to unlock the doors and I must say, he's stylish himself showing up in his scooter and rocking those boots.

Once inside, we were strictly told I got an hour to get this going and here I am ensuring things can be set up as swiftly as possible.

Karen [left] works on Jane becoming "John."

John [the real John...confusing I know..] stands in for Jane so I can get the lighting correct before Jane comes in for the real shoot.

I make Rina, the new intern for MSS, in charge of time and scheduling of the shoot. It definitely helps when someone can keep track of time especially in critical times like this!

I pose for Jane to illustrate what I'd like to see for the shoot.

For this shoot, I actually use a tripod :gasp!: There's a reason to it and it will definitely come into hand when post-production comes into play when I produce the final spreads for this shoot.

Luckily, I have my remote shutter so I can sit back and just direct Jane during the shoot.

After taking some photos on the tripod, I proceed to get detailed shots.

Agnes looking on to see what I'm seeing on my LCD screen.

BTS video was also taken with my [waterproof] HD videocam.

Next location is Mission Dolores and man what a nice day indeed!

After taking initial shots, I show Jane the turn out. We finish up here doing the poses needed and move on to the next location...

...which is right near Contemporary Jewish Museum in SF! Passersby were definitely wondering what's going on. We also almost got kicked out by security since he asked for a permit and I couldn't provide one. Luckily, Jessica proved that she's an Academy of Art student and is working on a project. ;) Now that we were on the clear, we were good to continue!

Our MUA [make up artist] was not feeling good in the day so I did tell her to chill at the nearby cafe [which we later got kicked out since the workers noticed she was doing makeup for Jane twice..hehe]

By this time, everyone's starting to get tired as we started officially at 8:45am and this here is about 1:45pm. I keep the team in cheerful spirits as I crack a joke to Jane as Jessica and Agnes assist Jane while I bow and pretend Jane is the queen and ask permission to photograph her. hehe

I take a few photos and move briskly as this area was so friggin cold! I definitely wanted to move as quickly as possible so we can get back to the sun and head to the last location.

Agnes ensuring the accompanying jewelry goes well with Jane. I believe Nicole had "all-access" as this was taken in the bathroom of the hotel nearby that they used as a dressing room.

The last location of the day! By now, it's 5:30pm and thankfully it's the last few shots that needs to be taken for the very long day.

Above is me taking test shots before Jane is photographed... stay tuned for the full photos and what I'm naming "Story-Spreads" once I get them past post-production.

All photos were taken with a very simple mobile set up with the help of girlfriend Cher managing the light and MotionScope members Ryan and Francis taking turns using their Blackberry's built-in flash light to give me some light in order to help me focus on their faces. It was that dark at Yoshi's! haha So thank you to the crew for making these images possible and of course The Foreign Exchange's time <25 minutes right before their amazing show!

On Friday, July 23, I got the honor of taking The Foreign Exchange official portraits while they were here in San Francisco for their 2 night performances at Yoshi's San Francisco. I mention "official" since I was able to get MotionScope Studies all access with The Foreign Exchange and I was the only one taking their portraits right before their performance on Friday.

BTS: Photoshoot: "The Sound Lab" with IQ (San Jose, CA)

After getting lost for a bit trying to find the location, we finally find IQ and the location.

Starting to unpack the car as I try to give Vinette (BTS videographer) directions to this area--probably not the best idea at the time when I'm terrible in directions already haha

The xB was packed to its fullest--besides the typical photo equipment there were props including a microscope and even dry ice!

Knowing that it was an indoor shoot, I decided to shoot tethered to my laptop since it can give a clear picture of what I'm shooting to Ro (manager) and Jane (stylist).

IQ and Ro were able to bring a table and had to make a last minute to get a white tablecloth [at the nearby Target].

A quick plug: the shirt I'm wearing is designed by my friend and director Patricio Ginelsa of Kid Heroes Productions. I've learned a lot from him on his sets of productions in terms of management, organization, and the importance of having a team present.

Reviewing initial photos...

Even though I have a ringflash, I've rarely used it as designed on camera axis.. and so it continues for this shoot as I used it for fill.

I believe I lost my ass somewhere.. hahah But I am putting to use my new Pelican case as I'm standing on it for extra height.

The treatment I prepared for both IQ and Ro after meeting up with them several weeks back.

As tradition, we take a family photo with everyone involved (left to right): Jane, Me, John, Diane, IQ (Talent), Ro, Vinette, and Nicole.

And following that tradition is to also give a funny face at the very end!

So thanks again to everyone involved in this shoot and definitely could not have done it with you all.

KSE: Mini Photography Workshop

Lately I've been more involved in the community program KSE as I've given a total of 4 [including this mini] workshops. For this workshop held on July 14, 2010, it was focused more on camera phone photography since the group of kids are doing a project with a low budget. For me, that's totally fine since any camera you have is a good camera than none!

I went over some basics of photography and then went outside to practice a bit. I then went over their images as viewed it projected onto the wall and gave back some constructive feedback.

Being involved in these community workshops has not only helped the attendees in understanding photography [my passion] but has ignited a love of teaching for me. I know I've taught kids in photography but having an older crowd who can actively give feedback is really great.

While I helped this group start on their paths to this photography project, I will be overseeing the production so I will be able to help them still. It's scheduled to be completed in late September so I'll try to give updates when I can!

I woke up and here he is situated right in my armpit. haha He also snores too which is funny [I admit, I snore too..] and I actually recorded it. Most of the time, he's very energetic and plays pretty rough sometimes--got the scars to prove it. But when I'm taking a nap or if he's attention hungry, he'll be nice at times.

[Wine and Sprinkles cupcakes to be specific =) ]. She's been my friend since freshman year and it's definitely a blessing to still talk and see her to this day. The other friends she invited too were all part of close-knit group from high school so couldn't have been any better.

My cousin asked if I could take my nephew to his swimming lesson in South San Francisco and thought it be a quick way to spend some time with him. Haven't been in a public swimming pool in awhile and since it is summer, dozens of kids were around and in the pool with parents and guardians waiting in the bleachers looking on. After his 30 minute lesson, he showered and prepped himself to go back to daycare. Brief moments like this are always nice!

Review: Moleskine Kindle Cover

I got this awhile back [like 1.5 weeks ago] but am finally making a review for it since 1) I'm a Moleskine fan [my friends know that already and so when this case was making the blog newsreel, couple of friends already knew I'd get this]--check this, this, and this--and 2) I love my Kindle! So what better way than to combine the both!

Packaging is simple--cardboard box with some black printing of the content inside.

I couldn't wait any longer but this sticker with the Moleskine Kindle cover wrapped in black tissue paper was a simple and elegant touch to it.

Known for that elastic band [in which many imitator's out there copy now], this keeps the Kindle cover from flapping open expectantly. I will say though that the usual oil-clothed cover is a little "oily" than it usually is... it has a "sticky" factor so it does pick up dust/hair easily but a few wipes takes care of that.

If you were to open it, you'd find it wrapped in that black tissue but inside the box is just that plus a little pamphlet with the explanation of the Moleskine.

What sets this Moleskine apart from its classic notebooks is this nice suede like lining to ensure that the Kindle doesn't get scratched. It's definitely nice to touch and makes it seem more expensive!

What is nice about this cover is that it keeps its analog past present with the digital. Moleskine is nice enough to include two Volant reporter notepads--reporter notepads in general are about $10 so you're getting $20 worth of Moleskine paper already with this cover! [Non-Moleskine fans must be like "Wait, you'd pay $10 for a notepad??! Sigh, if you're a Moleskine fan you'd understand...] I read that these notebooks are made specifically for this cover and its back cover slips in the pocket sleeve in the inside panel.

While it doesn't look secure at first, the Kindle is just held by 4 elastic bands. Trust me though, once they're securely on, there is barely give or movement!

Because it's so snug, the Kindle sadly cannot be attached with a protective cover--so this thing is bare and exposed to outdoor elements. I previously used a cheap eBay bought plastic hardshell but loved it because I can toss it in a bag or table and not worry about--plus, it had a protective plastic screen that was attached to it!

So here's the "problem": You see the Kindle 2? And then I'm sure you see the Moleskine Cover + notebook. This case does definitely add more weight and dimension to the reading experience but if anything, it's like reading a physical book. So don't expect this cover to be the slimmest or lightest!

I definitely wasn't thinking before today but I would get annoyed by the reporter notepad flapping away if I didn't hold it properly. Remember I sometimes do it to my regular Moleskine notebooks, I just used the elastic band to hold the cover and notepad closed tight. Wala! Annoyance gone!

While it does seem thick, the added width does actually become comfortable as you're not holding a piece of thin plastic and metal. On the other hand, the Kindle was meant to be thin and light for portability....so decisions, decisions...

Buyer's Advice:
In general, I like this case and am beginning to love it since it blends naturally with my collection of Moleskine notebooks I use everyday. For me, having a notebook around is essential as it's quicker and more convenient than digital in more ways than one. My advice to determine if this cover is perfect for you is get it if:

- You don't mind your Kindle being exposed [you can apply a screen protector but I go against it as it adds glare]
- You need a notepad on hand when you read books on your kindle [on the other hand, the Kindle does have its own highlight and annotation tools..]
- You're a Moleskine fan!

My arguments for you to not get this everything above but opposite: having your Kindle exposed is death waiting to happen, you'd the skip a notepad because you've moved on to digital annotations, and paying extra money because it's branded by Moleskine just doesn't make sense.

In conclusion, the Moleskine Kindle cover is right for me. Yes, it's $39.99 [$5 more than Amazon's official leather cover] but the classic look, it being the official Moleskine cover for Kindle, and integrated notebook had me sold at hello.

Ad Campaign: Molecover (The Haight, San Francisco)

Continuing the Molecover ad series, the next location MotionScope hit was The Haight in San Francisco.

If you're unfamiliar with this product, you need to know what a Moleskine is first. They are basically small pocket notebooks [but they do come in larger sizes to suit your needs], and are recognizable for their leather covers, cloth bookmark, and pocket in the back. They also have been recognized as the notebooks of artists such as Van Gough and Hemingway.

Molecovers are leather covers that go over your Moleskine to protect it but allows you to retain Moleskine's classic looks.

So enjoy the pictures below of the Molecovers set in The Haight in San Francisco.

BTS: Photoshoot: "On A Journey" [Sutro Baths, San Francisco, CA]

Yesterday late afternoon to evening, I had a collaboration photoshoot with a set of designers, make up artists, and stylists in San Francisco. Full credits are the every end but overall, there was about 13 people I'd say who was on "set" at Sutro Baths in San Francisco.

Pictured above is model Veronica getting some last minute touch ups with MUA [make up artist] Michelle. In the background is MUA Bianca doing the same to the second model Paris. On the left is stylist Angelica Garde.

Bianca's sister [on the left] was on hand for assistance.

Assisting me is John Enriquez who managed the main light throughout the day--a 60" Softlighter II mounted on an Alien Bees 800 on my "lighting stick" powered by a Vagabond II.
Ok yes, I'm short. haha But here I am showing the first model of the day Veronica some of the photos as I joke around.
Giving some instruction of what I think would look good but of course I reminded her that she's the boss haha

One of the two designers is Joy Santos from LA who provided half of the looks for today's shoot.

The second designer is Cara Ramos who I've had the pleasure of shooting her first premiere pieces.
Totally cold in San Francisco on an overcast day as well as being on the beach. Above is what the models had to bare throughout the shoot: changing outside in a makeshift dressing room!

One of my favorite locations at that spot was this area right here where Veronica worked it despite being scared that she might fall in the waters below. haha Veronica, thank you for trusting me and being able to overcome that fear!

Then again, I wouldn't blame her for being scared to go over that side when you're wearing these things!

This is the narrow 2.5 feet walkway we had to get to that previous location Veronica was photographed at. That hole in the center was very daunting--I'm sure especially when the girls are wearing those heals!

The 5th location was here right near the cave. Ideally it would've been at the cave but working with one light didn't give me enough light to highlight the cave. Luckily, Jane suggested this section off the cave.

The second to last location was here in this wide open area. A couple looks on [and many other passerbys look in wonder since it was a big production].

One my longest days for awhile to come was today and it started off with a breakfast meeting with the awesome creative fashion duo Jessica Phan and Agnes Fernandez of MyBFCloset.com at Palo Alto's Joanie's Cafe.

Do yourself a favor and visit their site now--especially if you're into new fashion/accessories that you can make for a dime [or a borrowed shirt/pieces from your.. well..boyfriend haha]

But really, their pieces are creatively fantastic and have grown quite a following and have already been featured in blogs and even Metro News! Quite a feat especially when they just started a year ago!

they even gave me a free sticker!

Our meeting was to discuss two things primarily: my upcoming shoot with my stylist [an androgynous shoot with a story] and a calendar LookBook project that will benefit a charity with its sales. We also discussed for the future a produced video by MotionScope Studies to showcase the DIY videos that its followers would want in clarity and instruction! So there's definitely a lot going with our collaboration.

Do expect this calendar to be completed by the end Fall and ready for order for the Holidays!

Kalayaan School of Equity x jC Photography: Photography Fundamentals Part 01

On June 25, 2010, I had my part 1 of 2 workshops in which it focused on the fundamentals of photography. You can check out more details here [including info on the upcoming FREE workshop!]

Above is the setup I gave my workshop in the small and intimate place in Daly City.

I did use my iPhone [1G] phone to control my keynote =) Totally cool app.

Joal Vargas, a board member of Kalayaan School of Equity introduces what KSE is about, its programs for the youth, and finally introduces me.

I showed my cousin in attendance the feature of using the Macro setting in a point and shoot camera.

In total, about 15 were in attendance--a mix of my family and girlfriend, KSE members, and some people wanting to learn.

At the end of the workshop, I went over some lighting concepts and then also gave out quick tips on using a pocket point and shoot cam since that's what most people have.

Next workshop is July 2, 2010 and will be covering the fundamentals of marketing. This can be applied for anything--photography, graphic design, a growing business[wo]man, etc!

Ad Campaign: Molecover [BTS: Haight St., San Francisco]

These are the behind the scene pictures I took for the Molecover Ad campaign series--this time at Haight St., San Francisco.

I'll be honest right away: I forgot to bring my pocket camera so instead I used my iPhone--and no, not the newest iPhone 4--but the very first generation iPhone.

Safe to say though, I'm loving the black and white photos I can get from this camera! =)

Pictured in these photos are the latest members of MotionScope Studies, the photo/video company that I started with my friend Ryan Brown. The fella is John and the lady is Nicole.

I was their photo director for the day as I instructed them to take the Molecover notebooks around Haight and capture it in great scenes.

Nicole [pictured above] was asking me if she could just come back here another day since I was giving them too little time. I had to be somewhere by 4:30pm meaning I only gave them 25 minutes haha

Despite the time constraint, I'm sure the images will be looking great as I'll be editing them and publishing them for web by the end of the weekend.

So here's to add another collection of Molecover images to the ad series!

Concept: "The Sound Lab" for IQ

This first conceptual art image is for upcoming rapper and producer IQ of sickasounds.com We met last week with his manager and discussed the concept for the image series we are aiming for.

As usual, I sent out my questionnaire to him prior to our meeting so I have something to brainstorm on. In one of my questions, "Who did you want to be when you were young?" he answered "Scientist" and my mind worked to incorporate who is now and who he wanted to be when he was young.

The image above is to illustrate what I'm looking for in his wardrobe and to assist my stylist who will help piecing this together.

More conceptual art to come! I still have to finish IQ's and also another photoshoot I'm doing in July as well.

Wedding: Gaby + Edgardo (Oakland, CA)

So this is gonna be a longer post than usual since I've been lagging on my posts!! So do enjoy Gaby and Edgardo's wedding day. =)

Gaby and Edgardo were able to get an awesome photobooth for their guests to use and definitely everyone had fun wearing the accessories.

Thanks to Gaby and Edgardo for having me photograph their special day! I definitely had fun and I'm sure you both did seeing your friends and family together for you.

Event: LA Boxing 3 Year Anniversary (06/13/10, San Bruno, CA)

Today was LA Boxing's 3 Year Anniversary in San Bruno, CA and I was able to cover the this event. I was also able to pitch MotionScope Studies, the photo and video development company I started to do video and the Assistant Manager Jermaine gave me the green light.

Why not go? There was free food (lumpia, grilled burgers/hot dogs, potato salad to say the least..), music provided by METHOD Entertainment, and the long list of raffle prizes!

If you haven't heard of LA Boxing, it says what it is--boxing as well as kickboxing, mixed martial arts, and muy thai classes for a high intensity cardio class. If you're wanting to burn fat like rubber, this is the place to be.

The photo above is one of the fighters scheduled for the sparring match in the afternoon. I noticed he was there for a bit and I guess he was taking a mental breather before his stretch and ultimately his fight.

Kevin Brown, DJ of METHOD Entertainment. Kevin and I go wayyy back in high school where I actually started photography because he needed a photographer for his teen club events. Yes, you read that right--he started teen parties in high school 2003-2005. He also came with a few shirts for his upcoming athletic line Active Elevation.

Every time I see bulletins to post up business cards I always scan other cards for 1) their graphic design and 2) possible vendors to work with in the future. And oh, I put mine up for sure too =)

Pictured above is the assistant general manager, Jermaine Del Rosario, who basically put this all together [and hired me and MotionScope]. Here he is being interviewed by Ryan Brown and Francis Basco.

Pretty good Muy Thai sparring rounds elicited moves [and shots] like this.

There were no losers today--everyone's a winner!

Next up was a good 'ol boxing match.

Jermaine asked if I knew any business wanting to donate any raffle prizes so I decided to donate two $249 1.5 hour sessions for the attendees. This is the first winner...

...and the second one winner!

One of the other amazing sparring fights was this lady and guy who went at it. Both were pretty aggressive and had some real good shots [at each other].

The last sparring match to be added in was this 11 year old going at an adult fighter. To be fair, the adult fighter was doing about 30% while the kid was having a real sparring match at about 75%.

This kid got tenacity! This photo made him appear larger than life since he is clearly shorter when both are standing tall.

Definitely had a good time at this event with the food, music, and demonstrations from the great fighters.

Did I mention that I get 6 months for free as a member for covering this event? =) You'll definitely hear from me soon as I'll start ASAP.

7th Annual SF Crawfish Boil (and my girlfriend's birthday!)

Today was my girlfriend's birthday and so I took her to San Francisco's 7th annual SF Crawfish Boil that was held at Marina Green. Here she is with [expired now] ID so we can get our drink on too.

Don't we all look terribly different from our outdated ID's? hahah

We arrived around 10:40am and it was a good thing we did so. The line started to get longer by 11am [which is the time the event opens].

First hour had free beer on the house and so if we were smart enough, I would've brought my Nalgene wide mouth bottle and poured the beer inside and come back again. But for what it's worth, we got 4 cups total so not too bad to wash the goodness that was abound.

After waiting patiently for the fresh crawfish to be ready for consumption, we shout for joy as they moved that large kettle down our way. My gf and I were lucky since we were the first table to be served.

While folks around were taking pictures and in being in awe, I was prepping myself on how to grab as many as I can with the given paper plates.

Here we....
....goooo!! Damn look at that fresh goodness. This was the last photo I took, rushed it in my pocket and grabbed 2 full plates.

After eating this goodness, I told myself I'm going to look up some creole recipes. The crawfish was so good with enough southern spices to delight. Plus, the boiled corn and potatoes were bomb!

I only got one more plate afterwards because people were being ridiculous. People were PUSHING AND SHOVING and reportedly two got into a fight and threw punches! Jeebus people, relax! While it is only food, people were upset that they couldn't much. I would be upset too since it is $25/ticket but I will say this event can use more organization in getting the food to the hands of paying [and hungry] people.

When I did get that second serving, one guy behind was elbowing out to make room so I screamed in his face: "SERIOUSLY??! YOU GONNA ELBOW ME RIGHT NOW??'' Ok, that looked intense than it really was but it was unbelievable what food + hungry paying people equate to.

My girlfriend working the little crawfish for the little meat. It does require some work to get a bit of meat!

I remembered that CheesyCam himself was gonna be here with a few of the DSLR enthusiasts to cover this event [and enjoy the crawfish too]. Check out his blog for some really great DIY projects, tips, and tutorials to get the bang out of your buck!

Afterwards, we needed some dessert and we headed to our favorite restaurant in Sausalito, Avatar's Restaurant. We came here for our favorite dessert: Avatar's Dream.

I can't even describe this dessert other than it's ice-cream like vanilla/chocolate....

...covered in pistachios resting on a sea of mango and rose syrup. I tried describing it to my best. =)

Wonderful day today [I forgot to mention how beautiful the day was! Hot day for SF] with SF Crawfish Boil, dessert at Avatar's, and my girlfriend's birthday. Yee!

Found this little dude for hire when I was doing one of my senior shoots in San Francisco. This curious one kept following us and probably was in delight to see that wonderful light source my [real] assistant Gee was holding haha

Good times and thank you Mr. Squirrel for making my senior [and I] laugh hysterically during the shoot.

I am published!!!....National Trails Day! (06/05/10)

....ok to be fair, a photo of me and a quote was published from Saturday's National Trails Day event in San Francisco's SFgate.com/Chronicle on June 6, 2010--so nothing of my photographic work was published. I found this event online and thought it would be a good morning to spend with my girlfriend. Plus, volunteering is never bad!

Here's a few images that I took on our day volunteering at Presidio's Mustard Gas site [yes, back in the day as I learned, this area in the Presidio was actually used as a practice area for soldiers and mustard gas!]

We had the chance to chose which teams to go to and so we decided to go with some weed pulling under the Gray Foxes!

We did have to sign a release/waiver form courtesy of REI who was one of the sponsors for the event.

A quick pic of some of the many volunteers that came and met at around 9:15am at Inspiration Point in Presidio.

Thankfully we were given gloves as we soon learned that pulling weeds is actually tiring and can be a blister-on-hands making chore.

The teams separate and head to the specific sites that we will be working at.

A quick fun fact: did you know that California not only has a state flower [Poppy] but also a state rock?! So! Our state rock is.... the Serpentine!

You saw earlier that we had to sign a release form, yea? Well it's worth it not just because we are giving our time back to Mother Earth.. but also because we got these cool athletic sweat wickering shirts from REI!

Our haul for the day! More than a dozen large bags of weeds [Purple Velvets, Rattlesnake grass, Foxtails and other weeds] on the truck!

Our reward? Delicious chicken [or veg] burritos and some really good salsa verde to spice it up courtesy of the organization!

We all ate here... what used to be a dumping site for the army but is now cleared as part of the restoration project.

And I will say that burrito was well deserved after we "got dirty" for sure. We all washed it down with some Hansen's Natural Cane Soda as well.

Thanks to National Trail Day and San Francisco for having this event available to those willing to volunteer and to have a great time in general giving back to Earth! Definitely will look forward to more opportunities like this!

BTS: Matt Cab's "The One" Videoshoot (05/31/10)

These are behind the scenes photos of friend Matt Cab in Polarity Post Studios in San Francisco shooting a promo vid for his song "The One" with MotionScope Studies shot on Memorial Day.

All these pictures are shot with :gasp: a film camera loaded with black and white film! =) So enjoy the nostalgic feel.

I've worked with Matt Cab before for some promotional photos earlier in the year and this time around, it's MotionScope in full effect doing a promo vid. Pictured above is one our videographers Francis doing a handheld video shot of Matt.

Matt being a gentleman by opening the door for me as we exit the recording room and join up the rest of the crew in the main room.

Sound engineer Ryan Frias was on board for the production of the video. His skills on the sound design is nothing short of amazing and I really can't wait to hear this album when it comes out.

Ad Campaign: Molecover

With a number of photoshoots and editing behind me, I have more time to push forward the ad campaign I'm directing for Molecover.com. I had the opportunity to meet the founder of the company and sit down to talk about how we can elevate the visibility of Molecover. We ended up with a San Francisco-based campaign to showcase the Molecovers and Moleskines in various popular San Franciso spots.

First off, I've been totally behind my BTS blog posts since I've been editing so many senior portraits lately [on top of that I have a wedding to go through and when I'm back from vacation, I have a cotillion].

But I decided to take a break and post this real quick since I did just post a teaser [post below]. This is my cousin's family and that's my goddaughter Kaylee looking at me. This is one of the photos that I can't wait to go through and edit. I mean look at that! Probably the cutest thing ever especially when I didn't even call her. I probably took like 12 photos in about 4 seconds when she did looked at me here.

Anyways, back to editing!

During my last week's class I taught my kids of 3rd graders in my Beginning Photography class how to pan using the point and shoot cameras. One of my students was having a hard time completing the technique so I lend my hand and helped direct her partner to run across. Just thought this was hilarious on how she "ran" across. hahah

Photoshoot: Carla Paulate [USF Senior; 05/08/10]

Here's Carla, a USF Nursing Senior graduating this month! I actually met Carla lonnng time ago when I was part of my friend's cotillion [18th Birthday Party] when I was a sophomore in high school. She was also my "rival" since we were both in our high school's dance/step team who performed in the big rivalry basketball game every year haha! So it's definitely been a long time since we've actually hung out.

We went around USF and chose some simple background in order to focus in on the graduate.

We then headed up the [dreaded] stairs of Lone Mountain.

We headed to the Study Room at Lone Mountain and I apologize to those who were studying at that time! I tried to work quietly but even if I whispered directions to Carla, I couldn't help the loud shutter and flash whirring haha. Pictured above though and below was putting the nice window light to good use.

This is when I got a view glances by then since I was now using my light set up. =P But can't argue with some of the great shots I got [above and below].

Before heading out, we used the lovely natural light flooding in the old halls of Lone Mountain.

Lastly, we headed outside right in front of main entrance of Lone Mountain and had Carla go in the shade to grab a few shots.

The last photo she chose for her edits and my favorite. Love how the railings in the back compliment her teal dress!

Photoshoot: Julie Ann [USF Senior; 05/11/10]

With the influx of USF seniors, thought it be good to mix it up by going someplace completely different... so here we are are Fort Point in San Francisco. Plus, Julie wanted something that reminded her of Hawaii since that is where she calls home.

Julie brought some props, notably a hat and the cool suspenders. I ended up giving a quick "demo" on how to wear the hat haha

Definitely loved the light that afternoon gave and did have help of the "light stick" I usually bring along--so thanks again Markie Idea who came along as my assistant.

We briefly went to an area that had a view of Golden Gate Bridge. In this shot, you can't see it but I had Markie hold my shoot-through umbrella to provide her some soft lighting. Photographers know that a nice sunny day is good in general but until you shoot directly under sun, problems are bound to come in the form of shadows!

This large brick building is practically under the Golden Gate Bridge's base. Plus, it had shade so it was good to use my light stick with that umbrella mentioned above to diffuse the light. Kudos to Julie by the way for being so involved and having Honors! I too was in the nursing program and yea... I was not involved nor had the grades... hahah So congrats again Julie!

We did find a place that had a more simpler background and it was the side of the rest stop at Fort Point.. hehe It definitely works though to provide a clean image!

A tip by the way to all graduates, do what Julie did: pin your hood and stoles so even in the windiest wind [like on this day], it'll be fine!

So after the cap and gown shots, it was time to have fun in another outfit. Props again to Julie since even though it was a nice day, it was windy like crazy!

I took a series of Julie walking across the parking lot and out of the dozen+ images that I shot, this shot is definitely a winner.

Thanks again Julie for the photoshoot and hope you had as much as I did! Congrats again on graduating and definitely wish you the best in your bright future!

...I'm glad there's plenty of time until Sony releases this that's compatible with my Alpha lens collection. =) People ask me today, "What do you shoot with: Nikon or Canon?" I say "Sony" and receive raised eyebrows.

Now if I ever get my hands on this, I'll truly get some more "Interesting.." remarks.

Photoshoot: Resi [USF Senior]

To be fair, there's about 3 other USF seniors [and 4 more I'm taking this week!] I already photographed but am waiting for their proofs to be approved. Here's Resi, a nursing senior who is graduating with honors [niice!] The photo above is her "pick" in which she's getting her "starter kit" prints [1 8x10, 1 5x7, and 4 wallets] that's included in the photoshoot.

We decided to shoot in USF's newest building, Kalmonovitz Hall. Definitely had fun in the lobby while passerbys looking on wondering what exactly is happening [you gotta see behind the scene pics coming soon...]

I did do natural light too since the large windows in this building is really nice!

I say this is my favorite photo from the bunch and I don't even know what I said as she was laughing when I took this... maybe it's my direction I give as I'd say "Ok.. look here! OK, over here too!" haha

I remember going by the School of Business' lobby a couple of semesters ago and thought it be nice to go there since I've yet to shoot here.

Finally, we go to this stairwell that I'm sure no student goes to [or even allowed to?] As we were taking photos, some USF staff passed by too and had expressions of either "Um... oookay?" [confused faces] or "Congrats!" [smiley faces].

A close up of Resi and the light from this stairwell and day really made things work... glad to have shot in nice weather in the always-changing SF weather!

The last shot that Resi picked from her photo reel and I must say it will look great as a print! =)

There's still tons of pics for me to go through but I will say thanks to my friend Gee who assisted me on this shoot and actually went through the 1st run of all the photos to weed out the bad ones. Visit his blog for sure and take a look at his work! He's also a "faculty member" of the partnership company and I put up with my friend MotionScope Studies. Sorry, but I gotta plug it in! =D

Kodak Playsport Image Test

Even though this Kodak Playsport is going to primarily be used for HD video, I wanted to see the images from its 5mp mode.

All images are treated through photoshop and even though it's completely automatic with no control at all, I actually kind of like this change of pace since during shoots I'm always tinkering in manual mode.

While it's shot in widescreen mode and there's no way to change it, it makes me look at scenes differently in "widescreen mode."

I am planning on using this camera more as I'll be using this for video shots during my trip to Hawaii in two weeks [woo hoo!] I can definitely get use to just simply plain video/photo recording.

One of my favorite shots [above] while snapping some random images in cousin's house.

This may be my "toy camera" ala Diana/Holga camera although all images are post processed individually in Photoshop.

Still, I can definitely get use to this style of snap shooting.

MotionScope: Late Night Dinner

So the deal was to go over "the office" and work on our individual work...

...we ended up in Shari's in South San Francisco by 11pm for late late dinner.

Run in with Donwill

Ok well maybe I didn't run in to him by chance since I did get invited to his "Wine and Beats" album listening party at PST [04/15/10]. But regardless it was definitely cool to see Donwill again since our shoot and be able to catch up with him presently and the future.

BTS: Dominican University Nursing Students Senior Photoshoot [c/o 2010; 04/23/10]

My classmate from high school contacted me and asked if I was available to do senior photos for her and her 8 other friends and I gladly accepted it. I haven't been to Dominican's campus and I will say right away that I felt like I was in a retreat--the campus was really beautiful and the weather couldn't have been any better!

All photos in this entry [except the one above] is by friend Jino Abad who assisted me for this shoot. He did a lot besides being with me from 9:30am until 6:30pm! He contacted all 9 ladies in the morning with a warm text greeting, had them sign the releases/invoices, collected payment, and of course carried the "light stick." To top it off, he conducted video interviews [which the BTS video is being edited right now] of all 9 ladies.

Janelle pictured here was my first senior to photograph for the day and she definitely knew how to have fun while taking pictures... can you tell? hehe Definitely made my job easier by not even having to have her loosen up for the session.

Hard to see, but the other lady pictured at left is Aileen and small world indeed--she went to my grammar school and also graduated with my friend and director Pat!

You can't tell, but right where I'm standing [above] is a ditch that goes down pretty fast. I actually lost my balance a bit and had to really stay still to regain my balance haha

Pictured above is Caroline whom I said to her she was my favorite of the bunch. But since I don't play any favorites, I will say she got me laughing a whole lot and she didn't even have to try. During our session, she sneezed like 12 times! lol Talk about allergies haha

While there's 9 total seniors I photograph, the two others [Janelle and Aileen mentioned earlier] actually graduated in Fall '09 and gladly wanted to take their photos and are not pictured in this group photo and the rest of the group series.

I definitely had a fun and surely will keep in contact with you all! Thanks for the great shoot and congratulations again on graduating!!! =)

Ok, it's definitely been awhile since I've actually kept up to date with blogging in "real time"--as in once I'm done with a shoot, I immediately post up images/BTS images from the shoot shortly after. I've been busy lately with a new company MotionScope Studies so that's my excuse. =)

Here's a pic of me [looking tall thanks to my step ladder] modeling for Francis who helped me with the shoot and took BTS photos.

You can't tell a lot from this photo but I will mention that it's basically a 3-light set up: 2 lights are lighting a white seamless roll of paper and then a diffused ring flash as the main.

BTS: Test Footage using Suction Mount

Test video of Sony w290 mounted on my Scion xB with a Suction Mount.

Wait until the end hahah

This test footage was for the wedding we did on May 1, 2010. While I was suppose to use the Kodak Playsport HD camera, it arrived as a faulty unit and so we resorted to using my Sony w290 which can record in 720p so all came out well.

Can't wait to see the final video/trailer for Gaby and Edgardo's wedding!

Photoshoot: Matt Cab [04/05/10]

I had the opportunity to photograph musician Matt Cab in his San Francisco studio. While most of his equipment is overseas with him in Japan, he still had a few things back here to be used as photographic backdrop.

I met Matt awhile ago when we were both at University of San Francisco--I'd say at least 2.5 years ago. I knew he was a singer [he'd occasionally play piano in the student lounge and sing] but I've lost touched with him since. Lo and behold he's now pursuing his music career... in Japan!

We shot this a day before he returned back to Japan and we definitely had a good time catching up and seeing what we've got ahead in our lives.

The image above is personally my favorite as for me.

We took a few shots outside in his patio and I decided to treat it more as a white seamless backdrop.

Well of course, I couldn't get away with it all but I tried my best. =)

Currently, MotionScope Studies are working on the Behind the Scenes video and I'll surely post that up. I've been so busy with MotionScope Studies myself that you can tell from my absence on my own blog!

Senior Portrait Session Special! [Say that 3 Times Fast!]

So it is kind of late, but I just wanted to announce my Senior Portrait Special at only $49 for a session. My typical sessions are $179 but I was a senior once [really not long ago... haha] and so I just want to make this opportunity affordable for everyone.

If anyone [in San Francisco] are interested, feel free to drop me an email directly so see what we can work out as far as a shooting day. And if you have a bunch of people willing to take pictures, I can definitely knock down the price a bit and schedule a whole day.

My first DAY session is at San Rafael this Friday--9 total Seniors starting from 10:30am and ends at 6:40pm. Long day indeed.

Event: Kollaboration SF Artist Portraits (04/10/10)

As mentioned in my previous post, I had the opportunity to photograph the various artists in Kollaboration SF's first event in Palace of Fine Arts. I'm definitely glad to have come out but even more glad to be able to meet the majority of the artists that performed.

Above is Sway Pinela of noted Drop N' Harmony, 6th Day, and of course American Idol fame pictured with his band.

I had to ask them all to do a funny face for me...

Above is Slashton who definitely has a great sound especially killing it with the female vocals.

The only swing/dance duo competitors but got the crowd going is Jean and Bromley.
One of the dance crews competing for the prize was Hydef. I really gotta give it up to their cool [stage] names--I was jealous when I met folks like Joosi and Contra. So I had them come up with my name--Click...get it? Camera? Ok.. bye.

Pictured above is emcee Mickey Cho and vocalist Hanna. These two were definitely down to earth as they were easy to talk to. You have to hear this guy--dope lyricist!

Pictured above is Michelle Martinez, an upcoming R&B/Pop singer from San Francisco. Long story short, I knew her when we were both budding high schoolers when I used to chill at her dance practices of Gen II. Good thing she remembered me! haha

Pictured above is one of the coolest comedians of the night Mark Zhang. He was definitely down to take a picture and kept Gee and I laughing with his jokes in between frames.

A guest performer, Groove Against the Machine, they blew up the stage with their high performance.

I wish I took better [lit] video because Andrew Plan was singing an impromptu song about me and Gee photographing him. Definitely cool guy with the guitar.

Press Pass: Kollaboration SF (@ Palace of Fine Arts, 04/10/10)

I had the privilege of being one of the photographers for Kollaboration SF's 1st event in San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts.

The event was a collection of great, amazing, and talented performers ranging from dance to music with a contest for prize money and guest performances as well.

Above is a picture of the program with the schedule of the performers and guest performers--the event itself was sold out and so the people knew there was gonna be great talent under one roof.
